Setting up WSJF for Jira Cloud

After installing  and enabling the WSJF for Jira plugin, you’ll need to make sure the WSJF fields are visible on your work item screens. This allows your team to input values and see the calculated WSJF score, which helps prioritize work based on its value and urgency.

Jira is renaming projects → spaces and issues → work items. The instructions below adopt the new terminology and point out any remaining legacy labels you may still see on-screen.

Adding WSJF Fields to Screens

The WSJF plugin automatically creates custom fields in Jira for you:

  • Input Fields: Time Criticality, Business Value, Risk Reduction/ Opportunity Enablement, and Job Size
  • Output Field: WSJF (this field automatically displays the calculated score based on your input values)

You’ll need to add these fields to your space screens to start using them. Here’s how:

Team-Managed Spaces

Team-managed spaces allow teams to manage their own workflows and fields with greater flexibility. You’ll need to manually add the WSJF fields to your work item screens.

  1. Navigate to your space
  2. Go to Space Settings.
  3. Go to Work Item Types.
  4. Select a Work Item Type.
  5. Add the WSJF fields (Time Criticality, Business Value, Risk Reduction/ Opportunity Enablement, Job Size, and WSJF) to the Work Item Type.
  6. Repeat steps 2-3 for the remaining Work Item Types

Company-Managed Spaces

In company-managed spaces, administrators have central control over configuration and workflows. You have the option to add the WSJF fields automatically or manually.

Automatic Method (Recommended)

We have automated the process of making fields visible in company-managed spaces. You can add fields to screens from two locations - the Getting Started page or from Space Settings:

Adding Fields from the Getting Started Page

  1. Expand Apps in the left navigation, then choose Prioritize with WSJF for Jira.
  2. Select the spaces to which you wish to add the WSJF fields.

Adding Fields from the Space Settings Page

  1. Navigate to your space
  2. Go to Space Settings.
  3. Select WSJF for Jira settings.
  4. Click Add fields to screens.

Manual Method

You can also add fields manually in company-managed spaces.

  1. Navigate to your space
  2. Go to Space Settings.
  3. Navigate to the Work Item Layout page (still labeled Issue layout in today’s UI).
  4. Click to edit a specific Work Item Layout.
  5. Add the WSJF fields to the Work Item Layout (Time Criticality, Business Value, Risk Reduction/ Opportunity Enablement, Job Size, and WSJF).
  6. Click Save to save the Work Item Layout

Ensuring Users Have Permissions (Optional)

Your Jira users will need the following permissions to work with WSJF (using the current Jira labels):

  • Edit Issues: Lets users enter WSJF values on work items.
  • Schedule Issues: Allows users to sort the backlog by WSJF score.

These permissions are usually configured correctly by default. If you need to check:

  1. Go to Jira Settings (gear icon) > Work Items > Permission schemes.
  2. Select the permission scheme used by your space.
  3. Verify that the relevant users, groups, or roles have the Schedule Issues and Edit Issues permissions.
